Chattahoochee Nature Center

Marietta, GA

The CNC is an 127 acre greenspace on the border of the Chattahoochee River that has trails, canoes, an extensive garden, and non-releasable animals such as birds, possums, reptiles, beaver and seasonal butterfly exhibit. They offer badge-specific workshops for Girl Scouts. Leaders can also pay a daily admission fee/membership to use their extensive grounds/venue for a leader-led adventure or participate in community events, ie fall festivals, STEM days, Halloween hikes, etc. The scout coordinator will also accommodate other badges on request, ie older girl badges.

National Post Card Exchange

This is less of a meeting and more of an ongoing project that can be done individually or as a troop. My girls are trying to swap postcards with girl scouts from every state. You can get connected to other participating girls on the Girl Guides and Girl Scouts Post Card Exchange facebook group. You post where are are from and what states you are looking for, and the private message other troop leaders for mailing info. It's been really fun getting postcards from across the country!

Woman run Business - Behind the scenes at Menchie's

Alpharetta

We timed this meeting to align with the Treats and Keeps fundraiser, so our girls would have a chance to learn about a real woman-owned business. The girls got to learn about what it means to run a franchise, got to go behind the scenes, get in the fridge and freezer, and see how Frozen Yogurt is made! Then we got to eat Fro-yo. We read a library book about how kids their age can make/save/spend money and talked about their ideas (raking, lemonade stand, washing mom's car, etc). We sent them home with a "Jar of Opportunities" project to do with their parents.

My Great Day and Snacks Badge Meeting

My Great Day: We did this at the start of the school year. We started with a relay race but let one team back their backpack the night before, lay their clothes out, etc to be all ready and the other team had all their stuff scattered. The team who was organized won the race. We talked to the girls about why that would be and how being prepared sets you up for a great day! We also went over how the girls can take ownership and things they can do at night to be ready for the next day. For the snack badge we brought in three troop moms who ran their our nutrition company. They came up with three nutritious and easy snacks for the girls to prepare as an after school snack. The girls made their snacks and sampled them!

Valentines for Firefighters - Cookie Season

We collected donated boxes of cookies at cookie booths for firefighters and made Valentine’s Day cards to go with them which doubled as booth decor. We delivered to several local fire stations on Valentine’s Day.

Yoga - Respect Myself and Others

Our girls took a yoga class to earn their Respect myself and others petal. We talked about taking care of our bodies, did positive affirmations, and finished up by making kindness rocks. Our class was led by DeAri with Little Yogis - her studio is in Roswell, but she came to our location for this class.

Season Opener - Tie Dye!

As a welcome to Girl Scout meeting with our Daisies, we first went over our goals for the troop, the girls made up their own behavior rules (and signed a contract for our board), and then we made Tie Dye Shirts outside. We did this again as Brownies since they'd grown so much.

Service Project - Making Placemats for Meals on Wheels

For our service project, our Daisies made placemats to be included in Meals on Wheels deliveries during the holiday season. First we talked about Meals on Wheels, and how there are people in our community that need helping getting food to eat. We watched a youtube video so the girls could understand who they are helping. Girls earned their Make the World a Better Place Petal. Next we set up three different craft stations, and each girl made as many as she could at each station to maximize the holiday love. "Placemats" needed to be 8x8 so they can fit inside the delivery boxes. Station 1: Glue on Tissue paper squares and Snowmen cut outs Station 2: Water Colors with white crayons Station 3: Glue on strips of paper to look like trees The moms set up a station to laminate the placemats with contact paper. My co-leader did hand deliver these to Meals on Wheels at their location in Midtown.

Making Board Games - Honest and Fair

We started with a conversation on why being honest and fair is important, and how when everyone follows the rules, games are more fun. Then each Daisy got to make her own board game with whatever rules she wanted, and we took turns playing each other's games. We finished up with a round of Back to School Bingo.

Karate - Courageous and Strong

980 Birmingham Rd
 Alpharetta, GA 30004

Our Daisies earned their Courageous and strong petal by doing a karate class at the Dojo with Coach Jared. Jared was awesome with the girls - they played games, learned some karate moves, and every girl got to break a board. Jared hosted us for free, and he gave discount cards for girls who wanted to sign up for Karate classes afterwards. We also read a book about other ways that they can be Courageous and Strong too, called Teeny Tiny Toady, by Jill Esbaum, I checked it out of the public library.

Fishing with Ranger Jen

Alpharetta

Ranger Jen is part of Milton Parks and Recreation, and she taught our girls to fish at Providence Park. She start with a talk about the park, the types of fish we'd find, and a tutorial of how to use the fishing rods. Then we went on a short hike down a paved path to the dock at Providence park to fish (we used corn and wonder bread as bait). The girls enjoyed it! Girl Scouts had sent me a word searches in one of our boxes, so we did that as a time-killer activity while waiting for everyone to arrive.

Hand Me Down Zoo - Visit from Exotic Animals

The Hand Me Down brought us several animals to visit with our troop. For this meeting they brought us a Coatimundi, and two types of opposums. The girls got to pet the animals and learned a lot of interesting facts. Did you know that opposums are marsupials (not rodents), and that they cannot get rabies because of their body temperature? They also eat venomous spiders and snakes, and many anti-venoms are based on them!

John's Creek

We did the Eco-friend meeting at Autrey Mill and it was great. The girls got to check out all the animals in the main house (snakes, turtles, etc). Then we did a scavenger hunt nature tour around the grounds. There was a $100 deposit to book, and it was priced with each girl was $10. They bill any girls over the 10 covered by the deposit after the meeting so you get an accurate count based on who actually attended, which was nice.

Milton

To earn our Respect Authority Petal, we visited the Milton Police Station. They provided coloring books, hats, and badges for the girls and talked to us about how police officers are community helpers to keep people safe. We got to do photo ops in the back of their police car too, and we did a craft where we made Thank You cards for the police officers "Ed-Emberley" style, using our fingerprints.

Bee Keeping - All About Pollinators

Mr. Bart, from the Milton Bee Club, came to visit us at our meeting and taught us all about honeybees. He gave us his personal history and how he became a bee keeper, and then taught us a lot of about the life of bees. He brought pieces of a bee box, and the girls got to help him assemble it, let everyone taste his honey (which was delicious), and then we went outside and he showed the girls how to smoke bees from the hive when it's time for honey collection. We also did a small craft making Bee Pencil Toppers.
